PERMEABLE / PERVIOUS PAVERS
A great way to add stability and decoration to your site, as well as allow for safe drainage of water.

What are Permeable Pavers?

Why should you use Permeable Pavers?

Where can you install Permeable Pavers?

What kinds of Permeable Pavers are there?

First things first, what are permeable pavers??

A permeable paver is a product, which can be made from various types of materials, that allows water to drain into the soil below, and be safely absorbed, rather than settling on the surface and draining to the lowest point possible and becoming stormwater runoff.

To put it simply, a permeable paver system is a self draining system.

Why should you use permeable pavers?

There are many environmental, time saving, and economical benefits.
Pearmeable pavers help the environment by protecting the quality of our water supplies. They reduce the amount of stormwater runoff entering our natural waterways and carrying with it contaminants and pollutants. The water can naturally drain into the surface through the spaces in the pavers. Permeable pavers also will help with erosion control, and flooding issues.

Time can be saved when installing permeable pavers because you will not need to install an additional drainage or retention system, as you would with most other paving systems. This deduction in time and materials will also save you money with your project. While at times, it may seem that permeable pavers can be more expensive to purchase in the initial stages, you will save in the long run when it is time for repairs, since you will only have one system to look at.

Where can you use permeable pavers?

Permeable pavers can be used practically anywhere! They are commonly used for driveways, fire lanes, public parks, parking lots, and landscaping purposes. When using them to handle heavy loads and large vehicles, make sure you create a thick and stable base for the pavers to rest on. For driveways and projects similar in nature, we recommend 5 inches of 5/8” minus, a crushed gravel with fines, which can compact well to create a nice surface to install your pavers on. This is a product we carry, which can be purchased in bulk or bagged quantities. Our office will help you determine the quantities of product you need to install any of our permeable pavers.

What types of permeable pavers do you have?

We carry a variety of permeable pavers.

Aqua-Pave Standard Classic

Aqua-Pave Standard Classic

The most popular is a product called Turfstone (sometimes called turf-grid). Turfstone is made of concrete, measuring 3” thick, and is 16” x 24”. Each piece will give you approximately 2.6 square feet of coverage. Most folks will fill the voids in the turfstone with topsoil, in order to grow hardy grasses, to retain and beautiful landscaped look.

Aqua-pave is a brand new product from Abbotsford Concrete Products, which takes their paver styles, such as Old Countrystone and Standard Classic Series, and makes them into a permeable style paver, in order to bring you more color and style choices. This is a product we do not stock, but once an order has been placed, can easily get and have delivered to your job site.

Grass-Grid is a lightweight plastic structure, made from 100% recycled materials, which stabilizes and supports turf, grass, or decorative gravels. With the same dimensions as Turfstone, Grass-Grid interconnects, allowing roots to develop with minimal restriction, and keeping the look of a full lawn.

Two more concrete products are SF Rima and Eco-Stone. SF Rima small square that can be installed with an emphasis on water drainage or turf growth. The dimensions are 3 1/8” thick, and 7 ¾” square. Depending on how this product is installed, you can grow grass in the joints, or fill them with decorative crushed gravel or pebbles. Eco-Stone is a double octagon-shaped paver measuring 3 1/8” thick, and 9” x 4.5”. We carry a variety of colored crushed rocks and pebbles to give it that extra spunk.

Now that you’re a bit more informed about what permeable pavers are and how they work, feel free to give us a call at (206) 783-2811 to help get you started on that project!
